The Talmud tells us that a thousand years after the destruction of the Tabernacle, an old man told Rabbi Yehoshua ben Karcha, “I walked to Shiloh and smelled the fragrance of the incense wafting off the walls.”

The archaeologists believe that this rare find, of so many jugs in one place indicates that the site was a storehouse for tithes brought by the pilgrims who visited Shiloh. Samuel, who served in the Tabernacle, may well have touched these jugs! “And Samuel served before the Lord; a youth, dressed in a cloth tunic” (I Samuel 2:18).
